How to Clear Negative Energy and Restore Balance
If you've spent any time exploring energy work, spiritual practices, or home cleansing rituals, you've likely come across the concept of a salt cleanse.
Simple, affordable, and easy to implement, a salt cleanse has been used across many cultures and traditions for generations as a way to clear stagnant energy, create energetic boundaries, and restore a sense of balance within a space.
Growing up, this was a practice I witnessed regularly and one that I continue to use personally today. While every person's experience is unique, I have found it to be one of the most effective and accessible ways to refresh the energy of a home, workspace, or business environment.
The beauty of a salt cleanse is its simplicity. It requires no special tools, is generally safe to use around children and pets when placed appropriately, and can be incorporated into your regular household routine.
Why Cleanse the Energy of Your Home?
Just as dust accumulates in our physical environment, energy can also accumulate over time.
Stressful conversations, emotional experiences, periods of illness, financial pressure, conflict, or simply the demands of everyday life can leave a space feeling heavy, stagnant, or unsettled.
Many people describe the sensation as:
-
Feeling drained or tired at home
-
Difficulty relaxing or sleeping
-
Increased tension between family members
-
Lack of motivation or creativity
-
A general feeling that something feels "off"
Whether you view this through a spiritual lens, an energetic perspective, or simply as an intentional ritual that helps reset your environment, cleansing your space can create a renewed sense of clarity and calm.
What Does Salt Do in Energy Cleansing?
Traditionally, salt has long been associated with purification and protection.
Many spiritual traditions believe salt has the ability to absorb dense, stagnant, or unwanted energy from a space. While there are different methods of using salt for cleansing, placing bowls of salt in key locations throughout the home is one of the simplest and most widely practised approaches.
The intention is not to create fear around "negative energy," but rather to maintain a clear and supportive environment where you can feel grounded, calm, and present.
How to Perform a Salt Cleanse
Step 1: Choose Your Salt
Take approximately one tablespoon of salt for each bowl.
Pink Himalayan salt is often preferred due to its natural mineral content and energetic associations, however any salt can be used for this process.
Step 2: Prepare Your Bowls
Place the salt into small bowls.
For a basic home cleanse, place:
-
One bowl just inside your front entrance
-
One bowl on each side of your bed
These locations are often chosen because they represent key energetic entry points within the home and your personal space of rest and restoration.
Step 3: Position the Bowls
Once positioned, leave the bowls undisturbed.
As the salt sits within the space, it is believed to absorb and neutralise stagnant or dense energy that may have accumulated.
Step 4: Leave for Three Days
Allow the bowls to remain in place for three full days.
During this time, simply continue with your normal daily activities. There is no need to perform any additional rituals unless you choose to.
Step 5: Dispose of the Salt
After three days, carefully remove the bowls and dispose of the salt down the drain.
Avoid scattering the used salt outside in gardens or natural environments.
Step 6: Replace with Fresh Salt
If you wish to continue the cleanse, refill the bowls with fresh salt and return them to their original positions.
Fresh salt supports an ongoing cycle of energetic maintenance and renewal.
How Often Should You Perform a Salt Cleanse?
For a deeper reset, I recommend performing the cleanse three times per month for three consecutive months.
This consistency helps create an intentional rhythm of energetic housekeeping, much like regularly cleaning and maintaining your physical environment.
Many people also choose to perform a salt cleanse:
-
After guests have visited
-
Following illness within the home
-
After periods of conflict or stress
-
Before moving into a new property
-
At the beginning of a new month
-
During significant life transitions
Using a Salt Cleanse for Your Business
The same principles can be applied to your workplace or business environment.
If you operate a physical business location, consider placing bowls of salt:
-
Near the main entrance
-
Close to the reception area
-
Beside the cash register or point of sale
For online businesses, remote workers, or home offices, position the salt near the area where you spend the majority of your working hours.
Many business owners find this practice particularly supportive during periods of growth, change, decision-making, or increased client activity.
Creating an Energetically Supportive Environment
A salt cleanse is not about perfection.
It is simply one way of bringing greater awareness and intention into the spaces where you live and work.
Whether you believe energy influences your environment spiritually, emotionally, or psychologically, creating rituals that encourage clarity, calm, and renewal can have a meaningful impact on how you experience your surroundings.
Our homes and workplaces hold the energy of our experiences. By consciously tending to those spaces, we create environments that better support our wellbeing, relationships, creativity, and growth.
If your home or business has been feeling heavy, stagnant, or simply in need of a refresh, consider trying this simple salt cleanse for yourself.
Sometimes the smallest rituals create the most noticeable shifts.
